I'm sure there's lots of Disney pros out there so I'm asking for any tips or advice...
My husband is finishing up an MBA program pretty soon and as a reward we want to take our family to Disneyland, and have never been! Are there places to get discount prices on admission tickets?  Where's the best place to stay?  And what's a reasonable price to pay for a hotel?  Is it better to fly or drive?  We haven't been able to travel much since we've been married, so we want to make the most of this trip, so thanks in advance everyone  Smiley

Although, I'm not sure how it all works but my neighbors went to Disneyland earlier this year for $50 each/day. They bought their passes from Ebay. It sounded like someone bought these passes and they rent them out for a day. It was a super good deal!! So you may want to check that out. I can ask my neighbors for more detail if you're interested in that route.

Costco usually sells the CA city passes http://www.costco.com/Browse/Productgroup.aspx?Prodid=11504432&whse=BC&Ne=5000001%204000000&eCat=BC|111|87499&N=4040956%204294912206&Mo=0&No=0&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US.

As for flying or driving, if you're just going to Disneyland and you get a nearby hotel, and flying is cheaper than gas, or you want to cut down on travel time, then I'd fly (my husband refuses to fly anywhere because of our kids' ages). But, if you want to go to the San Diego Zoo or Wild Animal Park, Knotts Berry Farm (I think Lagoon is lots better, but they do have a swim park I haven't been to), Sea World and other attractions, you would need to rent a car or just drive. You can google car rentals in CA and pull up the prices for different rental companies. It just takes a lot of research, but you can find the best deals. Try expedia, orbitz, priceline, travelocity, or travelzoo. I also check the hotel website and compare its price to these other websites I previously listed. We've always been pleased with Hampton hotels. I also stayed in the Anabella (right across the street from Disneyland) and that was good.

We usually try to book hotel with a continental breakfast so we don't have to pay for that every day. I also read reviews on the hotels and look at pictures. We also make sure they have a fridge so we can store our own food.

You can also do breakfast with characters--which is really fun for kids, but that can be expensive.

Also, take a cooler and pack lunches/drinks/water for Disneyland and other attractions (check to see if it's allowed) because the prices for eating inside the park are outrageous (like $8-9 for a kids meal)!

HTH. Have fun!

You can't get "discount" or "sale" tickets for Disneyland. We bought the 5 day pass (knowing we were going to be using 2 days of it), then sold the other 3 days on Ebay. Tickets expire 13 days after the first use. Our tickets ended up costing us about $25/each (after we sold the other 3 days). We dropped them off at a hotel near Disneyland where the people who bought them were staying.

If you don't want to go to that trouble, Costco sells passes that are a little bit discounted. But they are usually SoCal passes (include Sea World, etc). There are also "Go" cards which offer discounts in SoCal.

If you do a search for Disneyland blogs, there are quite a few blogs out there that give tips on how to save at Disneyland. A lot of saving at Disneyland is common sense - don't buy souvenirs at the park (we went to Walmart near the park), take your own food (you can bring in coolers and whatever else), etc.

We have always driven.  It is cheaper to drive, but you also have to consider traveling with kids.  My kids travel well and so driving is no biggie for us.  We like to stop along the way a couple of time to break the trip up.  We stopped a ghost town the last time we went and the kids got to pan for gold.  They loved it!  Here are some things that we do when we go each year.

Get a cheap hotel, but one that at least has a fridge.  We take our own food to cut down on cost.  We have cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and usually eat out for dinner (the dollar menu or something cheap like tacos Smiley)

Take your own lunch and snacks into the park with you.  You can't carry in a cooler, but you can have it in a back pack.

Take advantage of the baby station!!!  We found out about it when we were there the first of the year and it was a life saver!  I was nursing a baby and they have a nursing area, baby changing stations, little potties for the little ones, high chairs for feeding little ones and microwave for warming baby food and bottles (only).  It is by the first aid station in Disneyland and California Adventure.

Skip souvenirs at the parks and stop by the outlet store in Vegas.  The things in the park are SO expensive!!!  We went to the outlet and got a shirt for all 4 kids and a toy of their choice and spent around $20!!!!

Take advantage of stroller/swap passes.  When you go on a ride that not everyone can go on, go to the attendant and ask for the pass.  You or DH can take the kids that can go on while the other one waits, then when they get done, th other can take the pass back up to the attendant and go through the fast pass lane.  They will allow 2 people per pass, so DH and I would take turns riding with the 2 older kids.  Gives fun 1 on 1 time. Smiley

We always go through Get Away Today.  They are a discount service and donate part of your purchase to you kids school!

Have Fun!!!

One of the best and least expensive hotels is the Candy Cane Inn - from my research! http://www.candycaneinn.net/

Tripadviser pics & comments Link

Smiley Rated #1 by tripadviser.com 2008, #3 2009
Smiley $95 per night + tax (Less than most hotels)
Smiley FREE Deluxe Continental Breakfast (Tons of stuff offered)  This saves $$ for breakfast every morning!
Smiley FREE Round trip Shuttle (Most hotels charge round trip minimums of $3 per adult, $1 per child) It costs $14 per day to park at disneyland!
Smiley In-room compact refrigerator - make your own lunch, dinner etc...  Smiley
Smiley 250 yards from the Disneyland Main Gate entrance
Smiley A non-smoking hotel
Smiley Free Pack N Play

Plus a while ago  a 3 day park hopper pass has been $99 at Vons grocery stores in California.

I priced it out at Getawaytoday.com because I thought that would be great too - but getting my own hotel & tickets will save almost $250 versus getaway!

I too buy souvenirs elsewhere - like the Dollar Store  Wink or Wallyworld! Take your own glowsticks and the kids will love you forever! I bought some 50 cts for $3.00 at Maceys this past July  Cheesy  But they have them at the dollar store as well.

I'm going the week of Dec. 1st.  Will I see you there? (I included a download pdf of their brochure below)

Try Entertainment book online, you can put in the zip code for Anaheim and get discount hotels and print coupons for restaurant in that area. I would say drive so you can go to other places beaches/stores/restaurant. Everything right around the park is more expensive.

If you drive Prim is a good place to stay if all you want is to sleep. They have rooms for $15.00 a night at Buffalo Bills Casino.

Remember to consider the parking cost for Disney each day when you look at hotels. Most of the hotels now use the city shuttle which can get expensive. When a hotel advertises walking distants it is still about 2 blocks from the main gate to get in to the park.

Get fast passes for the big rides inthat land then do the rides around them. Be careful what type of cooler you bring if you are. They must not have wheels or be very big, we a backpack for snacks.

Feel free to pm me with more questions this is a huge topic. Smiley

Look for a hotel right across the street. Our first time going we went with a hotel with free shuttle, but we got stuck in pouring rain for 45 minutes waiting for it to finally come. From the point you catch the shuttle it's not much farther to walk across the street. Our second time around we stayed across the street and loved it. We were also able to come back during the day and rest up so we could go back for the fireworks later. We didn't have a microwave, but I packed easy mac, hot cocoa and instant oatmeal and we were able to use the coffee pot to heat up the water. We also made sandwiches and brought other snacks for lunch. My neighbors recently went and brought their crock-pot. They would throw something easy in it in the morning and when they came back in the evening they had a nice hot meal already. I shopped around at different internet sights for hotels. Sometimes they will have specials. I was able to get 20% of the price at hotels.com because they were having a special (this was 18 months ago). The park tickets I purchased through a travel agent from California on the internet and then just picked them up at the park. They were a little cheaper, but not much. I checked through ebay, but we were in need of 8 tickets and it seemed too complicated to try it to do it that way and stressful wondering if the people would deliver. I also thought it read on the tickets that they were nontransferable, so I wasn't sure if buying half used tickets over ebay was legal. We flew because we had some credit we needed to use up. Through hotwire.com we were able to get a mini-van for $14/day (this is with advanced reservations) which was comparable to the cost of a shuttle from the airport, plus we had a car to go to the store and the beach one day. I guess my advice is to shop around, since deals are always changing. Our first time the best deal was through Get Away Today, the 2nd time I did it a lot cheaper on my own. Have a great time!

As far as tickets go, there probably are cheaper ways to buy tickets, but Get Away Today is the best because of their feature called "Magic Mornings."  The days vary, but you get to go in before the park opens (like Disnwyland hotel guests) and you can get a lot of rides done before it opens up to everyone else.  If you have little kids, it's totally worth it because Fantasy Land is where all the long lines end up being, and if you get in before everyone else, then you can be done with Fantasy Land before anyone else comes.  When we went last year we rode Dumbo 4 times and got to all the other Fantasy Land rides before we had to wait in a line.

I am so picky about where I will stay.  I tend to splurge a bit on my housing.  We love the Disneyland hotels because they are so magical.  So if price doesn't really matter, that would be my first choice.  We now stay at any of the Marriott's close by.  There is one across the street (Fairfield Inn).  Last month we stayed at the Courtyard, we have stayed at the Residence Inn - all  Marriott.  I did the Marriott rewards program so I earned free nights every year.
I have five kids so seven people do not legally fit into a single hotel room anymore.  We now have to get a suite.  We paid for the "shuttle service" but found we could walk the distance in about the same time as waiting for the next bus to come around to pick us all up.
We actually just bought into a Disney Vacation Club at the Grand Californian.  We are so excited because we will have a two bedroom condo like hotel room, complete with a full kitchen, washer/dryer, all on Disneyland property.  This will cost us less than we spend for our large family each time we visit.  (We go every year).
Just have a fun and magical time there and soak it all in.  It's the only place where you can feel like you are a kid again - no worries.

My favorite place. Last time we went we stayed at Homewood Suites by Hilton, in Garden Grove. It was our best trip to Disneyland ever. This is not the cheapest place to stay but definitely cost us less in the trip over all. They do have a shuttle which worked out great for us. Free parking, Free breakfast buffet, Free dinner(Monday through Thursday). Free grocery delivery service. You leave your list and your refrigerator is stocked when you come home from the park. This saved us a lot of money because we never had to eat out. These suites are very comfortable with kitchens and bedroom. The Hotel even has an on site laundry room, and nice pools.

Also The Unofficial guide to Disneyland is the best thing to read to prepare for your trip. You can get it at Amazon or Barnes and Noble. I checked mine out at the library but to get the latest edition you might want to check around. The advice this book gives will save you tons of time effort and money. In my opinion there is not a better guide to the park out there.

The next best tip that made our trip a success was, a large snack box filled with savvy deals. Each member of our family wore a fanny pack filled from this box each morning, and their own water bottle. While waiting in line, we would eat snacks and have water bottles. We never bought food from the park.  A word of caution, they do check your bags at the gate. They will not let you bring in large amounts of food. But they do allow you to bring in a snack this way.

I also buy Disney souvenirs before going on the trip. However if you don't there is a great Disney outlet store nearby. Ask your hotel for the directions. Sometimes they advertise in the little pamphlets you find in your room.

We went to Disneyland last October and had a great time! It was a first for our kids (12,8 & 3). We found several message boards dedicated just to Disney(Disney4less, Disboards***, Allears.net) Disboards gave us the best tips and info on nearby food and where to stay. We splurged last year and stayed at the Disneyland Hotel. It is a little more pricey but they are having deals out there for the resort hotels right now. It was very convenient, you could take the monorail directly into Disneyland without having to go to the main gate. Downtown Disney is right next door to the hotel and we were given coupons to eat at some of the places.

It was recommended to me to stay at the Howard Johnsons hotel next time. If you have the Entertainment card, you can get a room for anywhere between 50-75 a night. They just redid their pool area into a Pirate theme so the kids would have fun swimming.

I also did the Photo pass. I went onto the disboards.com message board and shared the price of a photo pass. They give you passes and you walk up to one of the Disney photographers and they scan your pass and take your picture. When you go home you view your pictures online and order your CD. When I did the photo pass share, I was able to share the cost with other people going approx the same time just different dates and one person was in charge of ordering the CD for everyone and when she got the CD, she made copies and mailed them off to each of us. I think I ended up only paying $12 total compared to the $79-$99 for the same deal.

We brought our own empty water bottles and brought our own bottled water into the park. We also bought those one serving powder packets of like Gatorade, lemonade etc... and put those into the water to drink. We bought one of those sourvenir drink cups for $8, and then refilled them for free through out the day. We did bring a few snacks but they do try to check your bag.

We checked out the food ahead of time on the disboards to plan out the best and economical places to eat.

We took full advantage of the Fast Pass, you go to a Kiosk and scan your ticket stub/card and get a ticket for a particular ride at a later time. This way you don't have to wait in line as long. We even scanned our 3 year old's ticket to get a pass even though she won't be going on the ride. This way, our boys can go a second time soon after.

Another great deal we did is subscribed to ridemax.com. It costs $15.00 but you are able to plan out what rides you want to go on each day and ridemax will give you an itinerary of when to go to each ride so you don't have to wait in line too long. They also tell you when to get a Fast Pass. It helped us save a lot of time in lines and we were able to go on more rides during our trip. For example, we started in Disneyland on a Sunday, Ridemax told us to go directly to Splash Mountain, the farthest away from the entrance and get in line. My boys and husband were able on the  ride twice in a row because no one had gone over to that part of the park yet. My 3 year old and I got to go on the Whinnie the Pooh ride like 5 times in a row while waiting for my husband and boys. There was no wait at all. Ride max also tells you where to sit during the parades and fireworks. It was very helpful. I found some printouts of Disney stuff and put them in a folder for the kids to draw, and do crosswords on the plane ride.

We mailed ourselves snacks, water, and powdered drink packets in flat rate boxes 3 days before we flew out so we had some snacks there when we got there.

Lastly, I went to www.farecast.com to check on flights. You can enter in all your information and the airlines that you want to check on and they will scan all the deals. When the flights were over $400 per person, I used farecast and one day the price went down to $209. Our travel agent didn't even know about this deal.

I hope you have a great time in Disneyland. We really want to go again. Now we just have to buckle down and start saving.

We are on our way back from Disneyland now and it was AWESOME!!  One thing we did this year that we have never done before was pack in our own food.  There is a food 4 less a few blocks away from DL and we bought stuff for sandwiches, snacks to keep everyone happy and lots of water bottles and bottled Diet Coke.  Bottled because they won't let you take any metal or glass containers in.  ALSO NOTE: NO COOLERS ARE ALLOWED INTO THE PARK.  We had a fridge in our room, so we froze some water bottles to keep the food cold in our backpacks.  We put enought food for lunch & dinner in our back packs in a locker then when it was time to eat, we sat down for a show and someone went to the locker and grabed that meal.  IT WAS GREAT!!  We have easily spent $100-$125 on food in the park per day.  Drinks are $3 -$5 each and snacks the same.  WE probably spent $35/day packing our own food.  Healthier too!  No one complained and it was so great!
