Remember to rotate your food in your 72 hour kits about every 6 months.  Since mine was ready in April of 2006, next weekend (Friday-Sunday) we are ONLY going to eat our 72 hour kit food and see if we have enough, too little or too much stored.  I am not quite sure if I will use alternative cooking methods (I love my microwave a bit too much, I'm afraid  ;)) but I'll report on Monday the 25th how it went!

My parents eat out of there 72 hour kits every 6 months also.  They said it was quite an eye opener the first time they did it.  Realistically they didn't have enough food at all!!!  Since then they have made sure to stock up on enough food, and foods they really want to eat.

may I make a suggestion??  In a crisis situation, your stress level is very/extremely high, so be sure you get foods that your family is used to eating.  I teach alot of classes on emergency prep and we suggest staying away from beef jerky, even though your body needs salt to retain water, animal proteins take more water and energy to digest and the saltiness of beef jerky may actually make your more thirsty.

we also suggest getting some kind of backpack/wagon/stroller/cart - anything that has wheels to keep with your 72 hour kits, because if you really have the suggested amounts of food, it's HEAVY!

This website has tons of great info.

Well, the family ate our 72 hour kit food (and some extras) and learned we had PLENTY of food in the kit.  The kids got a little tired of it so I made a real dinner on Sunday night, but it was worth the effort to make sure it was enough to feed the family - actually, we had extra food.  Now it is time to replace the things we ate and a lot of the items are on sale!  I would encourage you to follow the list in the original post - it worked for my family (DH 40 DD 15 DD 13 DS 11 DS 9).  Adjust accordingly for your family - it is important.

SMITHS MARCH 2007

If you are ready to rotate your 72 hour kit food or to put it together, the Nissin Cup Noodles, the Kroger applesauce cups, the Kroger fruit cups and the Hunt's snack pack puddings would be EXCELLENT choices to add in for your grains, your fruits and milk items!
