Hi Ladies,
May I say the last few years I have found right now a great time to redo 72 hour kits. After the Quaker sale and Betty Crocker there is no reason not to have new food in your kits for a minimal cost (if any!).

An idea that has worked for me:
I put all the food on top of the kit in a gallon size plastic bag. That way I can pull it out next year without tearing apart the whole kit. Slid down the front of the gallon size bag I have a list that says:

Breakfast:
Instant oatmeal   May 2008
Hot chocolate     Sept 2008

Snack:
Oatmeal to Go     Mar 2008

Lunch:
Starkist Tuna     Jun 2009
Granola Bar       Jul 2008

Snack:
Fruit Snack       Aug 2008

Dinner:
Mountain House    Jun 2010

With the dates handy, next year I can replace the items I need to. The Mountain House Dinners are the dried camping dinners you can find at Walmart, Sportmans, Cabelas, etc. We like them because they last years and you only have to add hot water to the bag, close and let steam, and eat it out of the bag- no mess. It's also a big hearty meal. My husband also rotates these for us automatically when he goes hunting/camping.

The only food I paid for is the Dinners- all the rest has been free or close to free the last while. For dinner you could use Spaghettios or something from the Smith's sale too. I also put in a new Tylenol (free from Walmart) and rotated the batteries for the flashlights (sale at Kmart a little while ago). We keep our flashlights in the side pocket so it is easy access in an emergency and the batteries are easy to rotate.

Any other ideas that have worked for everyone? I'd love to hear them now while I'm in the mindset!

Thanks for posting this!  Now it has me in the mindset of redoing our 72 hour kits!  I love the idea of having the dates on the outside, that really helps to make rotating easier.

Target has their back to school backpacks clearanced right now for 50% off (Orem store).  I talked to an employee at the American Fork store and she said some of theirs are actually 75% off.  I bought some for my girls for their 72 hour kits.  $5.00 backpack!  They had a whole wall of them.

I agree, it is great timing.  I also rotate my children's clothing, to their correct sizes. As well as, rotate out Diapers and Whipes too. The free huggies ones fit perfectly in our bags.

You can also put in all the great Walmart freebies, etc. into the kits for personal hygiene that we get (shampoo, deoderant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc).  I try to remind myself that you are going to need those items too, along with food.  It's so nice because with the free trial sizes with coupons, most of the items would be free (including medicine, tampons, etc.)  Wink
