Oreos are a SURVIVAL item in my world!

Interesting story this morning on GMA - Product manufacturers are "reformulating" product, which can include decreasing the size of a product (from 32 oz to 30 oz on Hellman's mayo) or like Brawny paper towels now have 22 less sheets than it used to.  The alert comes when the product has been decreased in size yet stays the same price!  Some die hard consumer groups are calling this fraud, manufacturers are calling it a "reformulation".  What this means to you is that you need to come up with your own price point for a product and then keep your eyes out for the per ounce prices.  Another example they spotlighted was Honey Nut Cheerios.  The package used to be 14 oz which meant 14 servings in one box.  Now it is 12 oz in a box - you used to have to buy 26 boxes for a "year supply" but now you would need to buy 30 boxes.  It is even more vital now to learn shopping strategies to keep your grocery budget the same.

Thanks for the tip and alert.  I'll have to go on their website and see if I can watch the segment.

I wanted to read it too, and I found the link (it has the article and the video to the right):

Good morning America

This was really interesting.  Thanks for the heads up Lisa.

I think this happens with all products.  Where I seemed to notice it first was with diapers.  After having kids in diapers for many years in a row, I noticed that I was paying the same amount for diapers, but the packages seemed to get smaller and smaller.  Maybe I should have bought thousands of diapers when my oldest was born.   Wink

Does anyone remember when there were more than 10 cookies in a Girl Scout Cookie Box??  I purchased some at a stand at Macey's a couple of weekends ago, and although I am happy to support such organizations, they are kind of a rip off.....As a long ago girl scout, I remember the packages being much more full and NOT $3.50 a dozen!!  I guess I'm just feeling the guilt from devouring the entire box myself!!! Wink

Isn't that the truth!  My husband ordered a couple of boxes from our neighbor and at first I thought $7 wasn't so bad, but then you get the box and think of all the deals you find through this website.  It didn't take long to realize that if we weren't supporting our neighbor, we'd never purchase any Girl Scout cookies.

If you want your girl scout fix - dreyers makes a girl scout limited  edition in somaoa - yummy and thin mint that I have found so far - I will say I didn't think the thin mint was all that grand but if you really have a craving, it might last longer than the cookies - the somoa one has cookie chunks in it Smiley yum yum
