Hello!

I was wondering if anyone had some advice on how to make fruit and veggies last longer.  Do they do better in containers?  If so, what sort of containers?

Advice would be appreciated :-)

Even though I have sold the product for more than 4 years, I never tried the Fridgesmart containers from Tupperware until about 6 months ago. AMAZING! I can keep strawberries, bell peppers, cilantro, etc. for weeks! They come in many sizes and shapes. They are a big seller of mine and worth every penny!

Foodsaver containers - not the rolls, are great - you can even buy generics at wal-mart these days I think, also just a little tip but I know wrapping celery in aluinum foil makes it last longer - they also sell those green bags at walgreens that are suppose to make them last longer - anybody tried them??

The only thing I know of is with bananas....  if you keep them in the refrigerator they last longer. If they're in there for a long time the peel might get dark, but the banana is still good inside.

I also heard or read somewhere the apples make other foods go bad faster so if you keep them in the crisper, keep them in a sealed bag.

When my bananas get to the point that they are too ripe to eat, I mash them and measure it out for a double recipe of banana bread (who can eat just one loaf?).  I then put the mashed bananas in a ziploc bag and throw it in the freezer. I have literally had bananas in there for over a year and the banana bread was still wonderful! I haven't wasted a banana in years!  Whenever my husbands family comes to visit from out of state, I make banana bread and it's become a favorite for everyone.  The only problem is if I don't have time to make it, they seem disappointed if we don't have any. Undecided

Speaking of bananas whenever their getting brown, and i feel lazy, I just put them in the freezer whole with the skins on and then get them out whenever I make smoothies, if they can defrost for like 5 minutes, then you can squeeze them right out of the peels!

I unwrap bananas and put them in the freezer.  Then I don't even have to thaw them for smoothies.  I've heard they get really smelly if you defrost them all the way, but I don't have any experience with that.  My sister-in-law chops fresh cilantro and puts it in the freezer.  It goes black, but still tastes great in fresh salsa.  I like to chop peppers and freeze them on a cookie sheet.  When they are frozen I put them in a freezer bag and use them in any recipes that need them or when I fry hamburger.

Bananas also release a gas that ripens other food more quickly, so if you have a green avocado, then wrap it with a banana in a paper sack, and the avocado will ripen more quickly.

Some things like tomatoes do better outside of the fridge.
