for making bread. My mothers hand me down just died, it was a k-tech. It was an okay machine, but now I need to buy one. Does anyone have any good ideas, and where to get it? Thanks!

Sort of a long story.

My mom has a Kitchen-Aid.  She has had it for 30+ years and it works great.  When I was younger she made bread regularly.

So about 7 years ago when I was engaged I bought a Kitchen-Aid from Sam's Club.  Within less than 5 years I killed it.  It started smoking.  I took it into the Mending Shed, and it was going to cost as much to repair it as to buy a new one.  I was so upset that I called Kitchen-Aid.  They sent me a brand new mixer for no charge.  I was so impressed.

Well, about 1 year later my mixer started having problems again.  I called Kitchen-Aid who said that I worked it too hard.  They couldn't help me.  Luckily a neighbor told me that Sam's Club (and Cost-Co)will exchange mixers (and other items).  They traded me straight across.  That mixer was making a weird noise when I brought it home, so I took it back for another one.

I also received a Bosch for Christmas.  It works great, and I am confident that it will work for years to come.  I sold my Kitchen-Aid last month.  I think that the Kitchen-Aid mixers are just not as well made as they used to be.

So my reccommendation if you plan on making bread regularly would be a Bosch.  I don't like the center island as it is hard to scrape the bowl.  It can make 4-6 loaves of whole-wheat bread at a time (as compared to 2 in my Kitchen-Aid).  It has great attachments that work really well.  I have a Universal.  They also have a Compact and a new model.  The new model has suction feet so it won't slide off of the counter and several other improvements, but it costs more.  There is a Bosch Kitchen store in Orem on Center Street across from Wendys.  Their website is www.spoilthecook.com.  My neighbor has a store in South Salt Lake County (I'm not sure exactly where), and I would be happy to call him for the address and phone number if that is closer.

I adore my KitchenAid!!!  And my mom has a Bosch that works great and has lasted about 30 years!

We LOVE our K-tech, my mom has had hers for 30+ years, and we have never had a problem with ours, it is hands down the best bread making machine.

I love my KitchenAid mixer for making bread.  It's the KitchenAid commercial quality 600 with the bigger 6 qt bowl and metal mixing attachments (instead of plastic).  I got it specifically for making bread after my old bread maker went kaput so I wanted it heavy duty.  I got mine at Kohl's about a year ago when it was on sale for $399, plus I had the 30% discount on my Kohl's card, so I thought it was a really good price, (better than what you can get at Costco, if they even offer the commercial model). You can sometimes get a bonus food grinder or ice cream maker attachment too if you send in the rebate form.  I don't know if you are looking to spend that much money, but for me it was worth it and I'm hoping it will last me for many years.  I have made big batches of bread dough with lots of flour (12 cups), and it handled it no problem. It says it can handle up to 14 cups of white flour but I haven't tried that yet.  So far I have not had any problems with the motor heating or making weird noises.  The kneading/mixing time is usually less too because of how efficient the mixing action is.  I also use it for mashed potatoes, making dips, cakes, whip cream, whatever.  Some may find it a bit overkill if you're not making a lot of bread dough because the bowl is kind of big, but I wanted to make sure I had plenty of room and power.  I have not tried other stand mixers as this was my first one, so there may be better brands out there, but I'm really please with my KitcheAid.  Anyway, that's my 2 cents!

I have had my Kitchen-Aid for about 10 years now.  I use it regularly and mix bread dough about 2x's a month.  I have never had any problems with it, but I am not 'overworking' it either.  I would say that if you were planning on making bread on a regular basis (more than 1x a week), I would do a little internet research. Consumer Reports is a great site for ratings.  I've heard that the Bosch is great for bread, although I have not used one myself.  I think that the Kitchen Aid is great for just regular baking & mixing and occasional bread making.  Good Luck!

I've had a Bosch for 35 years....made bread regularly twice a week when the children were small (all seven of them). They're grown and gone now and I use my Kitchen Aid, 'cause we only need two loaves of bread each week. My KA is also a 'commercial' one with metal attachments and I have a meat grinder, etc for it, but it certainly does the trick for my bread in 5 minutes! The KA is great for on the kitchen counter, when I don't want to drag out the Bosch. Do your homework, you'll be happy if you research it yourself. In the 35 years I've had my Bosch, I've spent $15.00 to have it 'cleaned' recently and it works like a charm. My KA is also one I've had for years, and the only $ I've spent on it was to buy a new 'whip' attachment. Good luck!

i have a bosch and love it!
growing up, my mom owned a bosch she picked up from a garage sale in cali (in the early 80's but I'm pretty sure the mixer was from the 70's) and it still works till this day. not a single problem whatsoever.

I was staying with my parents for a couple months while our house was being built and they have a kitchen aid.  I hated it!  I was so glad to have my Bosch back.  It mixes a lot better than the kitchen aid!

Bosch mixer...all the way. I have had both the Bosch and the Kitchen Aid for 10 years, and the Bosch is simply easier to use for my 100% Wheat bread.
