I am in major need of help. I am the provident living specialist for my ward. We are putting together 72 hour kits the end of the month. I called the Lindon cannery to get the mylar bags and the worker there had a word of caution about them. She said that they received word a few weeks ago that the mylar bags and #10 cans weren't safe for food for the 72 hours kits, if you put items in like granola bars. You need to put food in them that has a 10% moisture content or less. People can get sick from items (like granola bars)being in there. I now have no idea on what do store them in. We were going to do the mylar bags so that you can just put it in your backpack.

Any ideas? This isn't a topic that I have lots of experience in. Thanks.

In my ward/stake we have just used the gallon sized Ziploc bags.  Since 72 hour kit food is supposed to be rotated every 6 months, they work out just fine.

PM Me if you want to communicate further - I am also a Prep. Specialist in my ward.

Our preparedness lady has a party with her family every conference and rotates her items which are just stored in a bag in the backpacks.  Good luck with your job!

We do the same. Every conference we drag out our 72 hour kits. Change the clothing for the coming six months, (winter or spring)  eat the granola bars, trail mix, etc. and replace it with new, check the batteries, 'crank' the radio to ensure it still works, add or delete any medicines. Our young adult children change diaper sizes, games, books, etc for their little ones. Its a great investment in peace of mind to check your kits while watching general conference.  We have some nonsensical things in our kits that are strictly 'comfort' items or as I like to call them....'save your sanity' items, such as chewing gum, suckers, card games, word finds, etc.

Food Saver Bags!  It's my most often used piece of equipment in my home.

I am the enrichment leader in our ward and last year we put 72 hour kits together....
Here are a few links:
I used this one--> http://preparedness.families.com/blog/three-days-worth-of-food-for-your-72-hour-kit <-- and it is a good idea to print a "menu" and keep it in your kits so if you ever had to make it last for 3 days you know what to eat and when.
Another one:

If you google "72 hour kits" you'll get lots of info! Smiley

As far as storing them, we put them in the LARGE ziploc bags. We got them at Wal-mart. Our family puts them in old backpacks that my kids won't use for school anymore. That way if we ever had to take them with us and had to walk, we could carry our own. And, because the backpack has pockets, you can put other non-food emergency items in them as well.
