General Coupon Questions
«

Hi. I'm new to doing coupons and I'm new to forum posting, so hopefully I won't embarrass myself.
1-How do you decide which coupons to cut out? I'm a little nervous about trying new brands, but I want to get good prices.
2-The Walgreen's coupon says "Limit 3"; does that mean I can use 3 coupons, and get 9 of the product?
3-Another coupon says something similar to "One coupon per purchase of specific product". What does that mean exactly?
TIA
Marissa

Welcome!! First off, I always clip any coupon that I may possibly use. I always ask myself if I would use it if it would make the item really cheap or free. If the answer is yes, I clip the coupon. I usually don't use close to even half of the coupons that I clip, usually because there is not a sale that is good enough for me to justify buying the item. I used to only clip the coupons that I knew I would use and threw the rest of them away, but I ended up wishing that I had kept a lot more. I also used to just clip what I knew I would use and then store the rest by date, but found that it was neater for me to just clip everything at once and I didn't have to worry about storing 100 inserts (I get 6 Sunday papers a week and when there are 2-4 inserts in each paper, it adds up quick!).
Next, on coupons like the Walgreen's that say limit 3 for example, you are allowed to get 3 items with that coupon. Any others that you buy at the same time will be regular priced because they only allow 1 coupon per transaction. The Walgreen's coupons are store coupons and you can use a manufacture coupon on top of that for greater savings (like the ones that come in the papers).
Last, when a coupon says one coupon per purchase, all that really means is that you are only able to use 1 coupon per product you purchase, each item that you buy is considered a purchase. You can always use a store coupon and a manufacture coupon together on an item.
I hope it all makes sense.

So, if you get 6 papers a week, do you clip all of the Walgreen's coupons 6 times? Or if you see a coupon that has a limit of 3, do you just clip it once? I'm kind of wondering if I can use most of the coupons more than once, because I'm not going to go to a store 3 times in a week, just to save a dollar or two.

I don't shop at Walgreen's very often, but I believe that if the coupon says, "Limit 3" that they will let you purchase 3 items at the coupon price. If you decide you want more than 3, then you will pay more. Hope that makes sense.

Honestly, I don't even clip the Walgreen's coupons. I keep all the current ads in my binder and then when I go to Walgreen's and need to use one of the coupons, I hand the ad to the cashier and they just scan it. The computer will only accept the coupon once per transaction, so any items that you purchase that exceed the coupon limit are at regular price.

I'm fairly new to the coupon thing too. Here's what I do. I know it's probably not the most effective way, and some of you seasoned
savvy shoppers will cringe. I get two papers a week (actually, it's from my mom and my mother-in-law). I take a sharpie marker, write the date on the front of the coupon book and put all the same date in a plastic sleeve in a 3 ring binder. I don't use very many of the coupons, so it's easier for me to just clip the coupons that I know I'll use before my shopping trip. As for the Walgreens, I never need more than the limit is so I don't have to make multiple trips. (like I bought some of the pudding this week, with a limit of 8 per coupon. I didn't need more, so I just used one coupon. If you did want more, you'd have to do a separate transaction or another shopping trip.) You don't need to clip those, because as was mentioned, they just scan it, and you can take it back if you want. THey don't need it. Also, with how I use the coupons, I sometimes find that the western family brand is still cheaper than the sale + coupons, so just watch. Oh, one more thing. I make a shopping list, and write the coupons that I'm going to use on it. Then I have a little photo sleeve book that I put the coupons that I'm going to use in. I have a baby, so I can't carry a huge coupon binder, diaper bag, etc., so this works for me. Again, I know that it's not the best way to use my time/coupons, but it works for me.

Thanks for all the good ideas. Walgreen's is one of the farthest stores from me, so I guess I probably won't be using it often anyways. It is good to know that they can just scan the coupons there, in case I do head up that way. All that stress for nothing.

Okay, I've got another question. What is the benefit of getting more than one paper (and ads) per week, if you can only use one coupon per item or transaction?

I use the same method as jlbuss. I don't clip coupons - it takes too long. I also use another website that shows me all the grocery stores in Utah and their current sales. These lists direct me to which packet of coupons to clip each week that I shop. I only clip coupons for the items I plan to purchase.

The benefit of getting more Sunday papers is more coupons!!
Like on the Walgreen's coupons, each coupon has a limit, but on the regular manufacturers coupons, you can use as many coupons in one transaction as you have items to fill the coupon requirements (some are good on 1 item, where some you have to buy 2 or more per coupon). Depending on your needs, multiple coupons can save you TONS!!
