What products are best to purchase at Costco?  I have been trying to keep a price book of things I buy so I can compare them at Costco but I feel like I am still in the learning curve on all of this stuff.  So when I get coupons to Costco I wonder if they really are a good deal.  Or what products to buy there coupons or not?  Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Don't cut and paste from another site - just share the deals you personally have made.  It makes it better if it comes first hand - and some other sites get very upset about sharing posts people have made on their site.  Thanks for asking - it shows respect for both sites!

For the most part I have found that Costco is not any less than other places.  About the only difference is that you can buy in bulk.  I personally don't feel like it is worth the membership fee, because there is not a significant savings.  You you are better off buy the sales and using coupons.  The gas is generally .05 less than the gas stations that are nearby, but you can still find gas for less or close.

This is all my opinion.  I personally have a Costco card for business, but rarely use it for personal things.

I think this is a good question and I have wondered about it myself before.  I think there are quite a few things that are a good deal at Costco.

For example: meat, esp. when there is a coupon (I got 4 lbs of pork chops recently for $4 total and roast before that), spices are cheap there (eg. taco seasoning, garlic in the jar, etc.), some produce (they have a 3 lb bag of lettuce for $2, 5 lb bag of carrots for between $4-$5, whole pineapples for $2.99 each, 4 lbs of bananas for $1.30 and so on), frozen rhodes rolls (60 large rolls for $6), graham crackers come 4 boxes to a box for $6, pre-packaged crackers and cheese come like a million to a box for under $4, a huge bag of pretzels is $3, their half gallon of whipping is always the cheapest, whole wheat bread is also consistently cheaper than other stores, as well as tortillas (4 packages of 10 tortillas for around $3), and then of course there are good deals on books and movies (just the other day they had the Xmen Trilogy for $12).  My sister in law says that the baby formula is the cheapest as well.  I also think office type supplies are cheaper there (construction paper, binders, page protectors, packaging tape, etc.)  They also carry a Larry H Miller $50 Megaplex gift card for $40 (so you save 20%!).

I don't buy everything at Costco.  There are better deals other places on things like granola bars, fruit snacks, cereal, yogurt, shaving cream, toothpaste, etc.  I think with Costco you have to look at what the grocery stores consistently sell things for and then look at what Costco sells them for and make comparisons.  Each family eats and needs different things so it's kind of like you have to make your own list.

Oh, one last thing - Costco gets some great seasonal things in (at Christmas their wrapping paper is the best deal and so is their tissue paper - they also sell their own brand of batteries, like AA's - 40 for $10).  They have good deals on plants and trees in spring.  They also have good deals on clothes from time to time.

Sorry for writing a novel on the subject.  It is just that I have done some research on it my self.  Hope that helps someone, at least a little!

I have shopped at Costco for years, now we aren't so close.  But if in the area the things I buy there are Cheese, Bread, Diapers, Paper towels, toilet paper, chocolate chips, Bananas, tomatoes they are yummy! and a few other things.

I think these things are consistantly cheaper and don't have to worry about the items on sale or using coupons.  They are a great deal if Costco has coupons.

I only get one sunday paper and use coupons now and then, I am more of a sales shopper than using coupons.

I don't have a Costco card because there isn't one close to me, but I've heard they have a great return policy if you are buying something electronic.  If you're in the market for one of these items, it's worth checking out! Wink

I think the Kirkland Pure Vanilla is a great deal also.  It's a big 16 oz bottle for only $5 (if I remember right).  Yoplait yogurts work out to about 31 cents each (even better with their occasional coupons).  Besides the fruit being a great price (like the bananas - they are about half the price compared to Albertson's and Smith's), it seems like it is always good fruit.  The grapes might be a little bit more expensive compared to the local sales, but they are always delicious.  They have some fantastic prices on office supplies online.  As an example, you can get 100 paper clips for $0.17 shipped.  A pair of office scissors is only $0.86 (check the Office Impressions stuff -- a lot of it is a great deal in my opinion).  The photo prices are great as well.

I never thought to look for tortilla shells and a few of the other things mentioned above.  Thanks for the great ideas and thanks to Resident1 for starting this thread.

If you are not one to shop the sales and use coupons, Costco is fine, but there are always. better deals to be found away from Costco.  They have really upped their prices on a lot of things that used to be a really good deal.  I will agree that there are some things that are good deals at Costco, their cakes are delicious and about half what the other places charge for that size (you get a half sheet cake for $15.99 the last time I got one and even a quarter sheet cake else where is more), the batteries are a good deal and the I buy my stamps there.  You can get gift cards to the movie theater, but I only go to the dollar theater with my family so to me, they are not a good deal between the price of the movie and concessions being so much more.  Anything that I have seen listed, I can find elsewhere for less by shopping the sales. It all boils down to what you are willing to pay for things.  I also really dislike having to pay a membership fee every year.  I don't feel like the savings add up to enough to cover the cost.  I do occasionally shop there for myself and my kids love all the tasters.  It is usually a splurge spot for me.  I absolutely LOVE the dried mangos.

I buy my bread at the outlet in AF for .80 to $1.00 for a loaf of Grandma Sycamores.
I buy my office supplies at the beginning of the school year and stock up for the rest of the year or more.
I get my Vanilla from Mexico for $2.50 for 32 oz - I realize that is not an option for most.
I always get my produce at Reams in Springville if I am that way or match the prices at Walmart.
I get my TP free at Albertsons Scott sales.
I usually buy my diapers at Target and will usually have a store and manufacture coupon to add to the sales on Luvs and Pampers.

This is the way that I do things and realize that not everyone has the time, or desire for that matter.  It is like a game for me and the kids love to coupon as well. Cheesy  My little 6 year old will look through the coupons every week and tell me what we can buy now because we have a coupon for it. LOL

Their electronics policy has changed due to major fraud - it was good while it lasted.  Embarrassed

I agree with the Vanilla in Mexico - that's what got me hooked on the pure stuff.  I was too cheap to buy it anywhere else, until a friend told me about the stuff at Costco.  My question is to Stea is do you drive or fly with the vanilla?  The few times we go or someone in the family (pretty rare) we always fly, and I didn't know if we could fly with that much liquid anymore (in both carry ones or checked - since they always ask whats in your bag).  Does anyone know?  I had a brother that recently went on his honeymoon there and we would have loved to have him bring some back, but didn't know if he'd be able to take it on the plane.  I haven't flown with the new regulations, but have heard stories of people having to throw away a tons of products.

Thanks.

I shop at Costco often.  I always get milk there and the grated Tillamok cheese - it just makes my life so much easier.

If you are diligent in your coupon/sale shopping, you will not find much use for Costco for your everyday groceries.  Also, prices are different throughout the country at Costco - which is the same with Walmart - prices between 2 stores are different depending on the location.

By Knowing your price points (what you think is a good deal on an item) you can use Savvy Shopper Deals to your best advantage - you can go to the sales store, or go to Costco.  I love shopping!

Drive.  I have a friend that has family in Texas just a short drive from the boarder and she is my supplier. Wink  You might want to check the regulations next time someone goes down.  I haven't flown for just over a year and I know that things have changed since then, but I was able to have any liquid in my checked bag, just not my carry-on.

I think that Costco is great for the items that we don't get coupons for, or if there is a brand that you particularly like that doesn't regularly go on sale.  I notice that the quality of their produce and products are great too.  It really depends on what products/brands your family likes and what you are willing to pay for.  I will still buy my milk, cheese (love the Tillamock), chicken, hamburger (comes in 4 frozen 1 lb tubes), bananas, berries, diapers, wipes (when there are no coupons), spices, vanilla, powdered sugar (must be C&H), etc.  It really depends what is in the coupon books when they send them, because even with their coupons, shopping the sales with coupons from the newspaper will still be cheaper.  I never buy shampoo, toothbrushes, bandaids, cereal, etc. that we can get for usually really cheap elsewhere.  HTH!
