How Much Do You Pay A Babysitter???
«

I think it's about time that I get myself a babysitter. I have always had family watch my kids or trade with friends, so I have never had to pay a sitter. How much should I pay? Do you pay by the kid, or just by the hour? HELP!!!!!

It's funny you asked this because I was going to!
We have also just had family (my mom and my husband's mother) watch the kids...we haven't gone that many places since we had our two year old and my husband was getting his masters we didn't have much time to go anywhere. But now that he's been done for a year I realized last week it was time for me to hire someone to watch the kids once a week for a couple hours so I can have some free time and then when my girls are used to her, we can start having date nights again. I want to make sure they are comfortable with her and they'll go to bed without putting up a fuss.
Anyway, my oldest just started babysitting and it seems that she's being paid at least $1 per hour per child. So that's what I paid my sitter this week even though my two year old was napping for half the time and my 11 year old was a helper more than anything....(now you're probably wonder why I need to pay for one if she's old enough to babysit other kids). I unfortunately don't dare leave my almost 12 year old with my younger 3 for very long. My nine year old has some control issues and my four year old and two year old can be a handful....and I don't think they'd behave as well for their older sister than someone else. Is this normal?
Anyway...enough of why I'm getting a sitter...I'd love to hear how much other's are paying and if the kids are sleeping do you deduct some money from what you'd normally pay if they were all awake?
Also, at least what age do you like your babysitter? I was babysitting kids at age 11 but I'd say I was more mature than most girls at that age.

My babysitter is my 16 almost 17 YO niece or an aunt or grandma. I won't leave the newborn yet (he's only 18 days old) but when my niece babysits my daughter (she's 2 1/2) I usually pay her a flat rate. I say I'll pay you X dollars to watch her for X hours. Usually I think it comes to about 2.50 an hour. I probably over pay her because she's such an awesome kid. She actually spends all the time playing with my daughter not just watching tv or whatever. I doubt this helped you at all. Sorry! I would say 2-2.50 an hour per kid depending on age. An 8 year old for example is MUCH easier to take care of than say, a toddler or baby.

My teens (15, 17) have been babysitting for years. It has varied how much they get but the going rate in our area seems to be about $3 an hour. One family pays $5 an hour but I never paid out that much when my kids were young. I think $1 per hour plus $1 per child per hour is fair but again, if you have an 11 year old who is almost ready to babysit your own family but not quite, I wouldn't pay for that child.
I also think the pay should depend on how good the babysitter is. I have one daughter who plays with her kids AND cleans the house. That is worth more to me (and she does tend to get paid more - though she doesn't babysit much now). My other one who just plays with the kids and is quite good at it. If the sitter just sits and does nothing other than being a warm body I wouldn't pay that much.
I also think that a sitter should be 12, though some are quite mature at 11 (especially if they are an older sibling and have helped their mom a lot). 12 year old girls seem to step in to that "young women's" role and are ready to be more mature and have more responsibility.
Just my thoughts.

I rarely have to pay a babysitter, but when I do, I pay $5 per hour (2 kids). When the new one is born (& a little older) I think I'll pay the same since my oldest will be 10.

I pay $5 hour. I have a 6 year old that is a huge helper and twin 15 month girls. I pay the same whether they are watching the 3 kids, or just the girls if we take my son with us or if he happens to be in school.

In Cottonwood Heights (at least this is what I've been told), the older girls charge more. We used an 11 year old about a month ago and her mom told us about $2 - 3 would be appropriate (her older daughter gets more, so I was happy to have the younger one). I was happy to pay her the $3 and gave her $15 when we came home (I have 2 kids - 3 and 5 years old). She felt it was too much and left the $5 in the car. At first I thought she just dropped it, but then figured she did it on purpose. She told her mom that she thought $10 was appropriate since the kids were in bed half of the time. She even cleaned up the dinner. I was really impressed and I'll be calling her again.
The $4 - 5 I was originally told when I inquired in my area kept me from getting a sitter for a long time. There are two 11 year old girls close to us that are mature and are great babysitters. My two kids are really good and so easy to babysit and I just didn't feel like I could justify $5 an hour for them, plus pay for whatever we wanted to do on our night out. I finally called the girl above because it was our anniversary and we really needed to go out. I was really impressed with the girl above when she decided the $15 was too much on her own. I'll have to use her more often to show her that I appreciate what she does and from now on she can let me know her price.

I have always paid about $1 and hour per child..so with my 4 kids, it ended up being $4 and hour. But, I do have an 11 year old daughter that is pretty responsible, so we rarely get a sitter anymore. I usually resort to one if we're going out of the area and couldn't get home quickly if we had to. I have noticed, however, that babysitters just aren't what they used to be. And, I may be showing my age when I say this, but I used to CLEAN UP AFTER MYSELF when I used to babysit. I would put the kids to bed and the house was usually cleaner than when I got there! In the past few years, I have not had ONE babysitter that I have loved and used more than a few times unless I was desperate!! I came home to a destroyed house and dinner still sitting out on the counter...so now with my 11 year old, our rule is that she doesn't get paid unless the house is as clean as I left it when we left. We have paid her about the same rate ($1 per hour, per child) but as she is the "motherly type" and a bit bossy with my 9 year old, he is ususally in charge of himself, and she gets paid only for watching the younger two. As my kids are getting older and my "baby" just turned three....I am starting to appreciate having kids that are old enough to watch themselves for an hour or two. It sure makes Savvy Shopping easier when I don't have little ones to take with me!!!

Not here...that's why I asked. The girls just seem to say "whatever you want to pay is OK." Seems like they'll take whatever they can get but I don't want to under pay them.

I have had my kids in day care for 8 years, not fun. I have changed daycares a few time for conviounce and other reasons. The current daycare I am in charge 175 a week for 3 kids. It my not be the best daycare but it is better than paying 375.00 a week. When it comes to a babysitter so I and my husband can go out I will generally give 5 to 10 dollars depending on how long i was gone. If it was only an hour then they will get 5 but if it is around 3 plus hours then i will give 10. alot depends on the mood i am in.

Think of it this way: if you were a teenager and had few ways to earn money, wouldn't you want to at least be able to get a new shirt or inexpensive purse for giving up a night with your pals?
$1 per hour per kid was the rate when I was a teenager, and prices have gone up since then!
I'm a stay at home mom & I babysit a 6 month old 40 hours a week and get paid $3.50/hr.
