Best Laundry Detergent?
«
on:

I have previously been using the cheapest concentrated (non liquid) laundry detergent. I now realize that I am allergic to it, and I want to switch to a better more-quality detergent. (I have an 8-month old in cloth diapers, so I do a lot of laundry.)
What is a good deal for detergent and which are your favorites? Thanks!

I found a receipe for laundry detergent last summer and I will NEVER buy detergent again. I average about 5 cents per load and got my years supply 288 loads for less than 15.00. I would say it is comperable to tide
1 c grated fels naptha bar soap found in the laundry section of the store (.99-1.09) each bar should grate to 2 c. This is also a good stain remover and I keep a bar on hand to rub on stains before washing
1c Borax 2.69 at walmart also in the laundry isle. it is a laundry booster and disinfectant and there are many uses on the box. I also keep a diluted bottle on hand to use as a stain remover for laundry
1c Arm and Hammer WASHING soda 2.69 at Harmons
Use 2T per full load in your washer.
Here is another link I was emailed earlier this week

You can actually use any bar soap, we like fels naptha because it is such a good stain remover, but for allergies you could use whatever you use in the shower (i.e. I have a son who uses only Dove in the shower. He has not reacted to this detergent, but I could make the detergent with Dove to decrease his chance of reaction.)

huh, i might try the home-made... we prefer liquid tide with fabreez, DH is sensitive to the powder, I like the smell, this is one thing I'd pay extra for to get what I like...

I like Tide w/bleach. It seems to clean better than anything else I've tried. I'll use a box with bleach and then a box w/o. I also add 1/2 c. of BIZ stain booster to every load. I LOVE BIZ!!!!! It gets stains out awesome. It has enzymes which attack the proteins in food, spit up, dirt etc... And we just got $2.00/1 coupons YAY!!!!!!!
I stock up on Tide when it is $4.50 or less a box (40 load). I actually got some at the Kmart Doubles a couple weeks back for $3.00

I too, have made and used my own laundry detergent from a very similar recipe, but found after six weeks my whites were a bit dingy. So now I use the homemade stuff on all my colors, towels, sheets, etc. but I still use Wisk on my whites. I too find if I spend a little more, its worth it in the long run.
For my whites I am brand loyal.

I like Charlie's Soap. I bought it on-line because it was recommended for cloth diapers. I love that it only 1 Tbs per load of laundry. It is so easy to have a years supply when it is only a Tablespoon per load. I think that I paid .10 per load when I bought it in the bucket. Shipping was free.

I just bought a new washing machine and it says that I should use the high efficiency laundry detergent. Anyone know what the difference is and if the homemade recipe would work?

I called the manufacturer of my HE machine and read them the recipe and they said it would be ok to use the homemade stuff, (I have an older Fisher/Paykel brand washer and dryer) but if I were you, I'd call BEFORE I did anything like that, a new washer is a pretty big ticket item for these troubled times. You certainly wouldn't want to damage it and lose your investment.

I do still occasionally use bleach on my whites, ab once a month just like I did when I used a traditional laundry soap. I have had friends comment that my daughters shirt seemed to look brighter and I have not noticed any difference in my darks (fading etc) I do seem to have difficulty removing stains from fit dry type fabrics with this laundry detergent.

Sorry I must be clueless, but what are "fit dry type fabrics". Thanks!

I'm clueless....obviously....but I just get whatever is cheapest, use a little bleach on the whites, and call it good. I do pre-treat with whatever stain treatment stuff was on sale with a coupon. I have 4 kids, and a messy electrician husband, and haven't had a problem keeping my clothes looking and smelling clean. (I admit, I LOVE the smell of Tide, but I'm to cheap to buy it. Thanks Amy for posting what you are willing to spend on it. I might have to switch over.)

Don't use Purex on whites:
I've used Tide for about 90% of the time in the last 15 years. The last couple years I was buying the Sam's Club brand because my mom saw something on T.V. or read an article where it was compared it to Tide and it had the same ingredients or worked the same so I started using it. I liked it. Then the last 9 months I've been using Purex because we were able to get it really cheap (almost free, if I remember). My husband just bought some new "underwear" and I can't believe how dingy mine are compared to his new ones. Mine aren't that old, either. I won't be using it anymore....on my WHITES, at least!
I don't think anything beats Tide!
