A couple of events occurred over the last week that reaffirmed the need to be prepared and have a life-sustaining supply of food and water.

My husband went to a local store to purchase contact solution. He encountered an empty shelf. After questioning an employee he was told that this particular company had been bought out by another company and has encountered "transportation changes." This store will not be able to carry this brand until the middle of April.

At the recent Wyoming Pandemic Flu Summit, Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt urged households to take steps to be prepared with a supply of food, water and first aid kits.

Leavitt stated: "When you go to the store and buy three cans of tuna fish, buy a fourth and put it under the bed. When you go to the store to buy some milk, pick up a box of powdered milk, put it under the bed. When you do that for a period of four to six months, you are going to have a couple of weeks of food."

This is just a simple reminder that any number of possible emergency scenarios may require us to live off of our food storage for a period of time. It also drives home the need to have a back-up for everything your household uses on a regular basis. Are you prepared?
