Couponing can contribute to healthful eating habits
Healthful eating seems to take on a renewed priority with many people at the beginning of the new year.
I noticed the other day my scale was broken -- it is adding 5 pounds of weight now when I weigh myself. The holidays were a wonderful time full of great food and parties, but now it is time to recommit to eating well.
It is a common misperception that you can't eat healthfully if you are a couponer. Yes, there are coupons for processed and quick high-calorie meals. There are also many great deals on food that is not very good for you. It does take discipline to not purchase those foods. My health is not worth saving a few pennies.
My philosophy is, I save so much money overall -- and not just at the grocery store -- I save on birthday gifts, eating out, buying furniture, clothes, renting videos, etc. -- that I can afford to spend more money on those items that will keep my family healthy. For most of you, next to the meat department, the produce department should be the place where you spend the most money at the grocery store.
For instance, this week at Smith's (through today), Dole Greener Selection and Classic Romaine bagged salads are on sale for 99 cents. Several years ago, I purchased brand new Tupperware FridgeSmart containers on e-Bay for a great price. These containers keep your produce fresh for much longer than if you were to just stick it in the produce drawer in your fridge. When I find a great deal on produce, such as the bagged salad, I can buy three or four of them, place them in my FridgeSmarts and they will last for about three weeks. This also makes it easier for me to throw together a salad for dinner. No washing and chopping is involved.
There are many great deals you can get on healthful foods by watching sales and using coupons. For instance, Cream O' Weber Skim Milk at Harmons is $1.65 a gallon with the recent $1 off 1 coupon. Light 'n Fit Smoothies are $1 at Smith's through today with the coupon from Sunday. Quaker Weight Smart Oatmeal is on sale at Macey's this week for $1 using the $1 coupon from the Sunday coupon insert.
These are just a few of the great deals you can get on healthful food. Regardless of how you choose to eat, you can save money with the Savvy Shopper program. Simply go through my free Deals E-mail and select those items that your family prefers. Eating healthfully without pinching the pocketbook is possible.
Note: The deadline for entering the two Savvy Shopper contests from last week is Sunday.
