Last week's Savvy Shopper column discussed the importance of organizing your pantry. Equally important to organizing your pantry is rotating the items in your pantry or food storage.
An easy first step is to print a pantry checklist, a freezer checklist, a recipe favorites list, and a shopping list from www.organizedhome.com/printable/showgallery.php/cat/506.
Or you can create your own.
Next, sit down and determine the items your household uses on a regular basis -- from food items to toiletries to health and beauty items. Determining the food items your household used can be done in part by going through your favorite menus. Simply write down the items needed to create those menus.
Using that list in conjunction with the deals e-mail will allow you to purchase those items at the best prices.
As you purchase those items, add them to your pantry and freezer checklists. It might be helpful to laminate these papers and put them on a clipboard with a dry erase marker in close proximity to your pantry. As you use those items, cross them off your checklists. By keeping track of your purchases and your food uses, you will not "lose" items and have them go to waste.
Remember when you add new purchases to your shelves and freezer to shift your older goods to the front and put the newly purchased goods in the back, or bottom of the stack, thus allowing you to use up those older items first.
This is a good time of year to go through your pantry and put together donations for the Utah Food Bank.
I often buy items specifically for donation purposes. Using coupons and watching sales allows me to not only save money, it allows me the opportunity to share my bounty with those who are less fortunate.
