Having a method for organizing your pantry or food storage is crucial.
Having the right equipment is an important facet of keeping organized. You will probably find that you will need additional shelving when you use the Savvy Shopper Expanding your Pantry program.
You can purchase ready-built shelving units, build your own shelving, or maybe you are lucky enough to have plenty of existing shelving.
Some of the things I have purchased that have helped me build up and maintain a usable pantry include an upright freezer and a food rotation system from Shelf Reliance.
For many years I debated the need for an upright freezer. I decided that if I could purchase frozen goods in quantity when they were at a great price, I could quickly recoup the cost of the freezer. Very quickly, I was able to fill my freezer.
Now, if I find a great deal on a case of chicken breasts, I can purchase an entire case, saving not only money, but time. I don't have to run out to the store to purchase chicken for several months.
If you do not have the money needed to purchase a freezer or storage system, set up a savings account for this purpose. Place in this account your savings each week from using coupons.
An easy way to do this is at the cash register. Have the cashier total your grocery order before your coupons. Pay this amount.
Then have the cashier deduct your coupons and give you the difference in cash.
Place this money in your savings account. I know a lady who has a "Hawaii Fund" that she has set up this way -- with more than $600 built up in just five months!
The security and peace of mind that comes with an organized and plentiful pantry is immeasurable.
