I detailed how to prepare for your grocery shopping trips in last week's column. The actual shopping trip can also be a dreaded chore unless you take some steps that will help make the experience more enjoyable.
Not only should you go shopping with your grocery list in hand, but I would also recommend pulling the coupons you know you will be using.
Place the coupons in an envelope with the store name on the front where you will be shopping. I do recommend taking your complete coupon organizer into the store in case you run into unadvertised specials or mark-downs, but pulling the coupons you know you will be using cuts down on frustration and time spent in the store.
While it is important to stick to your list, keep an eye out for specials and unadvertised deals. Remember, purchase only the amount you will be able to use before the product expires, and only purchase those items that you will use. It is not a good deal if you will not use it, even if it is a great price.
When you reach the checkout you can usually wait and hand the coupons to the checker after your groceries are scanned. If you have any buy-one, get-one-free coupons, hand those to the checker before your groceries are scanned so the checker can write in the price of the item on the coupon.
Take a minute before you leave the store to check your receipt. I try to get in line behind another customer so I have time to unload my groceries. I then watch my groceries while they are scanned so I can ensure the prices are correct.
Organization, planning and discipline are important parts of a successful grocery shopping experience. Then you can smile all the way to the car because you have saved so much money.
